School of the Museum of Fine Arts in collaboration with Amalia Pica’s sculpture, Now, Speak! The group of performers were given institutional parameters, and the pieces were created in response.
Given the prompt, I wanted to explore the record-holder for longest American filibuster: Strom Thurmond’s opposition of the 1957 Civil Rights Act. Another senator reportedly supported Thurmond by providing orange juice, pumpernickel rye bread, and bits of cooked hamburger. Mimicking filibuster tactics, I narrate his hours before the event, describe a detailed pumpernickel bread recipe, list the history and manufacturing steps of orange juice, and tell the cultural history of the burger.
